Elizabeth Cousens is the current President and CEO of the United Nations Foundation

Elizabeth Cousens is a diplomat and thought leader who has worked at the forefront of peace processes and played an influential role in UN policy innovations, from peacebuilding to the Sustainable Development Goals. Elizabeth is also the author of several books on peacebuilding and international relations, including "Peacebuilding as Politics: Cultivating Peace in Fragile Societies" and "Ending Civil Wars: The Implementation of Peace Agreements". She has written extensively on conflict management, peace processes, state-building and the United Nations. Prior to joining the Foundation, Elizabeth served for several years with the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York, including as Principal Policy Advisor and Counselor to the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and Deputy Representative to the UN General Assembly. She has also worked with UN missions in Nepal and the Middle East and lived in conflict zones, including Bosnia and Haiti. Elizabeth holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar, a B.A. in History and an honorary doctorate from the University of Puget Sound.
